The goal of the music program at JSE is to instill in every student a love of music, and appreciation for music no matter
where life takes them. Every student in Kindergarten through 4th grade attends a music class every week. Students have a chance to experience a variety of ways to make music, including singing music, playing music, moving to music, creating music, composing music,
and performing music. A wide variety of musical experiences are provided that get students out of their seats and away from paper and pencil as much as possible. Students also learn the basic skills needed to become better musicians, as well as the background knowledge they will need if they choose to pursue music later in their school careers.
Music Programs:
Every student at JSE has the opportunity to participate in a school music program every year. There are 2 programs each
year, one for K-2nd grades, and one for 3rd and 4th grades. These programs provide the students an opportunity to experience the feeling of
standing on a stage and performing in front of an audience. They also help students learn how to be an attentive audience and identify what things they should, and should not do while watching a performance. Finally, these programs help students learn to become more discerning musicians as they critique their performances and identify areas where they did well as well as areas where they could improve.
Recorders:
Every 4th grade class will learn the basics of playing the recorder, and will go through the “Recorder Karate” curriculum. This is done in addition to the regular 4th grade music curriculum. Recorder Karate allows each student to work at his or her own pace while still providing
incentives as each student progresses through the different belts. The recorder is a great instrument to use as an introduction to playing an
instrument, as well as to reinforce music reading, and helps prepare students to play other instruments in later years if they choose to.
Choir:
4th graders also have the opportunity to join the JSE 4th Grade Choir. This is an optional activity that meets once a week after school for 30 minutes. The 4th Grade Choir represents our school by performing at several locations around Conway, as well as at our State Capitol in Little Rock. This is a wonderful way to introduce these students to choir and to prepare them if it is something they would like to continue in later years.
